Hangar Bowl Halloween Bash

Halloween is a sick time to be in Charleston. Being that it is a pretty big party town, there are always parties and events happening at the bars and backyards all around us. Seeing flocks of costumed people walking down the street for the latter half of October is a regular occurence, and you can bet that they are getting down. If you are a skater, one of the sickest things happening by far is the Halloween Bowl Bash at Hank Biering’s house on John’s Island. John’s Island is the country outskirts of the city, and when you see the bowl Hank has in his yard, you would understand why it would have to be so far out. The Hangar Bowl (known by many as “Bieringville”) was in a skatepark in the 90’s until Hank and others moved it to his property, and raised the deep by two feet. With a 12 foot deep end, it is the only true vert in town, or even in the area. This was the 31st Bowl Bash, and the bowl has seen many re-layerings and renovations over the years. It is now fully covered in skate lite with pool block all around. It is by far in the best shape I have seen in my time going out there, if not the best it’s been during its time on Hank’s property all together.

A bunch of people travel into town every year to skate it for the Bash, and this year was no exception. We had homies from Colorado, North Carolina, Florida, and probably other places I just didn’t hear about as well. Even those who don’t skate vert will come out and just watch the show, and it is a damn good one every year. The days leading up to/following the Bash, the other backyarders and spots all over town also get pretty torn up by the travelers and locals alike. The first spot in the edit is a concrete bowl around the corner from Hanks owned by our buddy Ed Peck. Double waterfall bowl with hips galore.

The last thing I’ll say is when you see the infamous desk come out, you know shit is about to go down. It’s a desk with a pool block on top, and motherfuckers skate it every year. It’s usually when the sun is about to set, and everyone is nice and fired up. A homie sits in it so that the shit doesn’t flip into the bowl, and everyone who wants it is good to go. At that point, it’s glory or death and everyone else who isn’t skating it gotta get out the way!

Thank you Hank and Danielle Biering for another great year and everything that y’all do for the scene and for skateboarding in general.
